Blue Cross Blue Shield Parking Structure

Detroit, MI

The downtown Detroit skyline changed with the addition of the first roof-mounted solar array in the city in 2011. J. Ranck Electric installed a 220 kW system on the roof of BCBS of Michigan’s four-story parking structure, in partnership with DTE’s SolarCurrents program. With a footprint of nearly 3/4 of an acre, the solar array covers 31,000 square feet of the 42,000 square-foot roof. The array is providing power to BCBS employees and visitors, producing around 20% of the base power for the company’s Lafayette campus.
