Fiber Optic Communication Backbone – Ann Arbor, Michigan

J. Ranck Electric was the prime contractor for installation, verification, and testing of the West Ring and Bi-Sector phases of the Outside Plant Fiber Optic Network for the City of Ann Arbor. The city-owned infrastructure connected several municipal-owned facilities including, city hall, fire stations, libraries, utilities, and park and recreation sites. JRE installed approximately 15 miles of new aerial fiber, 17 miles of newly installed underground cable in pre-existing conduit, and approximately 3 miles of newly-bored conduit and fiber optic cable. JRE coordinated up to 7 crews working at a time, not including subcontractors, in 5 different work scopes: directional boring, aerial fiber placement, underground fiber placement, inside electrical work, and tree trimming.

Project Details

35 miles of single-mode fiber optic (SMF) network cable installed
180 strands of fiber were terminated at each of the City’s two data centers
31 separate building sites were connected to the overall West Ring and Bi-Sector networks
3 pair (6 strands of SMF) terminated at wall or rack mounted patch panels at 26 site locations
Fusion splices were made conforming to ANSI/TIA/EIA standards
Closet Connector Housing (CCH) and Patch Panels
7 Secure Rack Enclosures
Vehicle and pedestrian traffic control managed throughout the project in congested project sites, including downtown Ann Arbor, with zero incidents
