LEADING THE ELECTRICAL CONTRACTING
INDUSTRY INTO THE FUTURE

Above & Beyond - Office Recipient

< Back

The 2007 recipient of the Above and Beyond Award is a person who is characterized by confidence, a drive to succeed, and the knowledge and experience to do so.  In 2007, this individual went above and beyond when he was tasked with overseeing our largest and longest-running project in 2006 and 2007.  We respectfully acknowledge Randy Wood as the recipient of the Above and Beyond Award for 2007.

In the summer of 2005, we acquired our first project at Hemlock Semiconductor.  Randy Wood had started working for J. Ranck Electric in August 2005.  At this early stage in his career with JRE, we weren't certain of his capabilities, but this opportunity arose for a Project Manager at HSC.  We assigned Randy to the task and he gladly accepted.  From that point on, under Randy's direction, Hemlock Semiconductor projects have come our way in a fast and furious manner.  In just 2 short years, J. Ranck Electric has acquired 50 HSC projects.

For many months, Randy solely managed these projects, with the assistance of excellent field foremen.  It wasn't until recently that additional onsite staff was assigned to the project.  Besides managing the projects and 130 electricians at HSC, Randy also estimates upcoming HSC projects.  He estimates approximately 75% of the upcoming bid packs, and since the onset of the project, has successfully estimated 241 change orders.

Randy has developed an excellent working relationship with Hemlock Semiconductor and has earned the respect of many key decision makers at the plant.  He has also earned the respect of Safety Director, Michael Hottinger.  Randy's projects have only incurred 2 accidents in a 28-month period, both of which were only minor medical, non-lost time incidents.  When you consider the amount of manhours on this project (150,000+), that is a very good safety percentage and speaks well for Randy's management and direction.

The Hemlock Semiconductor project is distinct from any other current JRE project in that it requires a security passport, background check, and drug test.  When there are new hires at HSC, Randy works integrally with the Safety Director to ensure that new hire paperwork, drug tests, and background checks are completed and satisfactory.  Before Randy releases new hires to work, he always spends time with them explaining what is going on at the plant, the potential dangers, and his expectations of their performance.

It takes defined qualities to project manage over $18 million worth of work, including organization, strong leadership, and trust in your team.  In addition, Randy is not afraid to make the hard decisions regarding personnel.  He is able to see the big picture and is willing to do whatever it takes to ensure these projects run in a smooth and successful manner.  Although his daily duties must be extremely stressful and exhausting, Randy oversees it all with confidence and collectedness.

We respectfully acknowledge Randy Wood as the recipient of the Above and Beyond Award for 2007.
